Bergen County DPW Worker Dies After Tree Falls On Him: Report

The worker, who was not named, died Thursday when the tree he was working to remove fell on him, according to a report.

A Bergen County Department of Public Works employee died Thursday after a tree that he was removing in Saddle River fell on him, according to a report on NorthJersey.com.

Saddle River Mayor Albert Kurpis confirmed during a borough council meeting that the man died, according to the report.

The 48-year-old employee was not identified. He and four other workers were removing a tree at the Saddle River behind East Allendale Road when the bank gave way and the tree fell on him, according to the report. By the time help arrived, it was too late, Kurpis said in the report.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco released a statement Thursday night that the employee was seriously injured at 5:15 p.m. while working in Saddle River Park. He said the employee was taken to Valley Hospital in serious condition, but declined to name him or give further information.

A Bergen County spokesman said that the State Office of Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health will investigate the incident.
