Social Media Post Said Someone Would 'Shoot Up' School: Police

The post urged students to spread the word and officials cancelled classes and athletic events at Garfield High School Tuesday.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Authorities said a social media post Monday where someone threatened to "shoot up" Garfield High School prompted authorities to investigate and cancel classes Tuesday.

School administrators contacted the Garfield Police Department at 8:30 p.m. about the social media post, which said, "So I just heard someone threaded (sic) to shoot up the school tomorrow, no funny spread the word," said Capt. Darren Sucorowski.

Police began investigating as soon as they got the information. Police and the Garfield Board of Education decided at 11 p.m. Monday to cancel classes so a full investigation could take place, Sucorowski said.

Garfield Police detectives investigated "all available leads" and determined the post's origin. The investigation determined that there was "no credible threat" to the school, the captain said. All athletic events were also cancelled. All other Garfield schools wereopen Tuesday.

Police Chief Raymond Kovach thanked the parents and students who reached out to police and administrators to report the threat.
