Bergen Police Officers Revive 1-Month-Old Who Stopped Breathing

The baby was unresponsive, not breathing, and cyanotic when officers arrived.

Two local police officers were honored recently for saving the life of a 1-month-old baby.

Allendale Police officers Kevin Azevedo and Alex Helmer Aug. 12 responded to an address after a grandmother frantically called 911 to report her granddaughter was unconscious, said Chief George Scherb.

The baby was unresponsive, not breathing, and cyanotic when they got there, Scherb said. Azevedo immediately performed CPR on the baby.

After several seconds, the baby took gasping breaths, but she was still in distress, Scherb said. Azevedo continued CPR until the baby's color returned and she cried.

Once the baby was breathing again, Helmer monitored her condition until EMS personnel arrived. EMS personnel continued treating her and took her to the hospital.
