Black Bear Spotted Near Franklin Lakes School Monday
Breaking: Police urge residents to be alert.

FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ — A black bear was spotted in the borough Monday, prompting warnings from local police.
The bear was seen in a wooded area nearby Ramapo High School, CBS2 reported.
Franklin Lakes Police Detective John Bakelaar could not be reached for comment Monday.

- Remain calm. Make sure the bear sees you.
- Back away from the bear and take children and pets with you. Go inside and shut the door.
- Make sure the bear has an escape route as you walk away.
- If you encounter a bear at close range stay standing, avoid eye contact, back up slowly, and speak in a calm, assuring voice. Do not turn your back on the bear.
- If a a bear does not leave right away, or is aggressive, call 911 immediately.
