Close Your Windows In Franklin Lakes And Mahwah Next Week: See Spray Schedule

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Mosquitos can spread potentially fatal illnesses to humans, so Bergen County is continuing to spray to stop the hatch.

Mosquitoes across Bergen County recently tested positive for West Nile Virus, a potentially fatal disease, County Executive Jim Tedesco announced on Monday.

New Jersey is one of the few states that hasn't dealt with any human cases of the virus yet.

The county is continuing this summer's “Bergen Bites Back” initiative to control and eliminate mosquito breeding.

They also want to educate the public, they said.

Mosquito-borne illnesses in New Jersey include encephalitis and West Nile, although the majority of people may not even know they have the latter, and will recover. But it's important to know the symptoms so those with a serious case can get treatment. (More details about mosquito-borne illnesses in the Garden State are here.)

The county has been spraying various towns in early morning hours and asking residents to keep their windows closed.

The following towns are set to be sprayed next week. Officials have asked residents to keep their windows closed between 3 and 6 a.m. that day:

• Monday morning: 3-6 a.m.: Mahwah
• Monday, 3-6 a.m.: Teaneck Overpeck area
• Monday, 3-6 a.m.: Franklin Lakes
• Monday, 3-6 a.m.: Garfield
• Monday, 3-6 a.m.: Creskill
• Tuesday, 3-6 a.m.: Bogota
• Tuesday, 3-6 a.m.: Hackensack

The county has said, "In compliance with N.J.A.C. Title 7, Chapter 30 the Bergen County Mosquito & Vector Control BCMC may be applying insecticides for the control of adult mosquito populations on an area-wide basis, as needed, throughout Bergen County during the period of April 30, 2026, through Oct. 31."

The following adult mosquito control products are applied from the ground by truck, handheld equipment, or aircraft, all using low volume (LV) or ultra-low volume (ULV) techniques:

• Duet (Sumithrin/Prallethrin)
• Fyfanon (Malathion)
• Zenivex (Etofenprox)
• ReMoa Tri (Abamectin & Fenpropathrin)
