Couple With Disabled 6-Year-Old Escapes Bergen County Fire, Needs Help
Their house was burnt to a crisp in Bergen County this weekend. Now this couple and their 6-year-old, who has special needs, need funds.
BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Natalie, Omar, and 6-year-old Amaria McCalla escaped a devastating fire in their Oakland home on Saturday, but all they have now are the clothes on their backs and a few documents.
Friends have started a fundraiser to help them out, and continue to seek donations.
The fire started around 2 a.m. on June 1, friends said.

"Thankfully, everyone made it out of the house safe and sound," says the fundraiser. "With the exception of some documents and the clothes they were wearing this event has left them with virtual no belongings and no place to call home.
"We are calling on the general public, community, friends and family to support this family as they strive to rebuild their lives and make it through this trying time. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a big difference."

Friends noted that the family had just come to a place of peace after their last challenges.
Amaria was born with multiple disabilities, they noted, and "This was their first true home as a family outside of the extensive time spent at hospitals. This home represented their bright future."
'Medical And Personal Needs'
By Tuesday morning, friends were about halfway to their $50,000 fundraising goal, they noted.
"With the help of this fundraiser, the family has been able to replace some clothing and day to day items needed for Amaria’s medical and personal needs," posted a friend in an update on Tuesday. "The remaining funds will be reserved for the home."
In a previous update, organizers wrote, "The family is beyond grateful for the outpouring of support. It’s a testament to the power of community."
The organizers are also accepting physical donations of items. Find out more about the fundraiser here.
