Foxes, Coyotes, And Bears: Bergen County Town Plans 'Living With Wildlife' Event

After coyotes and a fox attacked people and dogs in Bergen County, one town hopes to prepare its residents.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Coyotes have attacked at least four Bergen County residents since September, killed a pet dog, and took another into the woods. Now, one local government is planning a seminar on "living safely with wildlife."

Wyckoff's Board of Health has planned the event for its residents from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Shotmeyer Room at the Wyckoff Library on Feb. 19. Carol Tyler, a NJ Certified Animal Control officer, will be the speaker.

A poster for the event, with snakes, a raccoon, skunk, deer, coyote, and bobcat shows it's not all about animal bites.

But coyote concerns may be on more people's minds now that Saddle River police said last week that a coyote took someone's small dog into the woods. READ MORE: Coyote Drags Dog Into Woods In 4th Attack In Bergen County Town, Police Say

In October, a coyote killed a woman's pet shih tzu in Ho-Ho-Kus. That coyote was not captured, police told Patch.

And a resident of Montvale said she was bitten by a Fox in December.

Residents have been concerned about the fatal virus rabies, and at least two were treated for the virus after being attacked. Those who are bitten or scratched by a wild animal should contact a medical professional immediately, officials say.
