Registration for 4-H Gardening Class

A  six-week Junior Master Gardener Program for children ages 8 to 11 will be held at  March 3 to April 28, 2012. The international youth gardening program is run by the Rutgers University Cooperative Extension 4-H Networkand comprises curricula designed to allow youth to explore their world through meaningful horticultural and environmental science activities that: 

engages children in novel, hands-on group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening and cultivate the mind;

* encourages leadership development, personalprideresponsibility, and community involvement through the incorporation of service learning projects, which enable youth to make a positive contribution to their community;

* allows youth to interact and bond with nature so that as they go through the JMG program they can learn to conserve our natural resources and make knowledgeable decisions about the environment.

Participants will learn where food comes from, with a concentration on vegetable and herb gardens; how to choose, plan, plant and harvest a garden plot; nutrition in the garden; materials you can make using your harvest; and how to care for their plants. 

Students who participate in all activities will be eligible for one of eight Junior Master Gardener pins. Once all eight chapter pins are earned, the student can qualify for the prestigious Junior Master Gardener Certification. 

Classes will be held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. beginning March 3. Class size is limited to 10 students and costs $30 for registration. For more information or to register, contact Monica at monica@abmasfarm.com or 201-891-0278 ext. 7. Registration deadline is Feb. 15.
