Going On Vacation This Winter? Police Offer These Safety Tips

WYCKOFF, N.J. — Police departments are urging residents to take steps to ensure the safety of their property while on vacation this winter.

• Arrange for the shoveling of snow from driveways, sidewalks and walkways ahead of time.
• Park vehicles in your driveway or have a neighbor park his or her car in your driveway.
• Tell a neighbor or relative where you can be reached at all times.
• Make sure your answering machine's outgoing message doesn't inform callers you are not at home.
• Stop mail and newspaper deliveries and ask a neighbor to pick up any deliveries.
• Lock all doors and windows, including garage doors and sheds.
