To the Editor:

On November 6, the people of Franklin Lakes will cast their vote for the K-8 Board of Education. As a current trustee on the Board, I feel all the candidates deserve our gratitude for the time and dedication they have put forth and intend to, yet one candidate will surely have my vote.

Shirley Hermansen O’Reilly has all the qualifications that make her the best candidate. She has four children who have gone through, or are still a part of, the Franklin Lakes School District. Having a daughter who recently graduated college, Shirley understands the academic challenges that lie ahead and she has a clear vision for the types of programs that our children need in order to ensure a successful high school career and beyond.

Shirley is an active volunteer who donates countless hours to charity. She is a Board Member on the Woman’s Initiative for Networking and Success at Standard & Poors. She is a co-chair of the Community Outreach initiative for the 55 Water Street Network.  Shirley is an active job coach for the Coalition for the Homeless and is currently engaged in PENCIL, which provides innovative solutions to problems facing children in NYC Public Schools. She has been a member of the Woodside Avenue PTA, a class mother, chaired the holiday lunch at FAMS, and most recently served on the Franklin Lakes Efficiency Study, analyzing and addressing the needs of school children and taxpayers in our town. And she has done all this while holding a managerial position at Standard & Poors in New York City for the past 29 years.

Shirley has a passion for education and is always a voice of reason, even in difficult or contentious situations. Shirley is not biased and her only agenda is doing what’s best for the children and taxpayers of Franklin Lakes. Shirley is approachable, listens to the ideas and concerns of parents, and most important, will take appropriate action as a BOE member.
