The New York Times Endorses Josh Gottheimer

The newspaper's editorial board said the 5th Congressional District has had the 'misfortune' of being represented by Rep. Scott Garrett.

WYCKOFF, N.J. — The New York Times' editorial board has endorsed Democrat Josh Gottheimer to represent New Jersey's 5th Congressional District.

"The district has had the misfortune of being represented for nearly 14 years by a founding member of the ultraconservative, antigovernment Freedom Caucus, Scott Garrett," the Times said.

Gottheimer's campaign has attacked Garrett's voting record against helping 9/11 first responders, women's rights, his opposition to abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

Gottheimer, a former Microsoft executive and speechwriter for President Bill Clinton, has received endorsements from the state's teachers union, police, and firemen's unions, and the Sierra Club, an environmental watchdog group. He lives in Wyckoff.

"Mr. Gottheimer would serve the district far better than Mr. Garrett," the Times stated.

Garrett has come under fire ever since last year that he refused to contribute to the National Republican Congressional Committee because it backed gay candidates.
