Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital to Earn Disease-Specific Care Certificate of Distinction for Dementia

Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital at Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) in Wyckoff has earned “Disease-Specific Care Certificate of Distinction for Dementia” from The Joint Commission (TJC). A registered nurse surveyor spent a full day reviewing protocols, policies, procedures, and the facilities, along with interviewing staff, patients, and family members to assess compliance with TJC standards for disease certification. Ramapo Ridge is only one of two facilities in the country to have earned this certification in the country and the only one in New Jersey.

TJC’s behavioral health-care standards are developed in consultation with health-care experts and providers, quality improvement measurement experts, and individuals and their families. The standards are informed by specific literature and expert consensus to help organizations measure, assess, and improve performance.

“Christian Health Care Center’s Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital is pleased to be one of only two organizations nationally to have received The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Certificate of Distinction in the management of dementia,” said Douglas A. Struyk, CPA, LNHA, CHCC President and CEO. “This distinction is an outstanding affirmation of the excellent care and clinical expertise provided by our physicians and staff caring for our patients, residents, clients, and consumers who struggle with dementia in the midst of mental illness.”

“Disease-Specific Certification by The Joint Commission means that we have complied with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care,” said Rebecca Dauerman, Vice President/Administrator of Mental Health Services. “This was a rigorous endeavor that brought together an interdisciplinary team working together to develop and implement novel approaches and strategies that have demonstrated improvement in individualized care and outcomes.”

Historically, CHCC was founded by a group of deacons in the Reformed tradition in 1911 to provide compassionate care to those suffering from mental illness, later introducing the elder-care component. Today, CHCC offers a full spectrum of mental-health services including Christian Health Care Counseling Center, which provides individual, family, and group counseling for children to seniors in a supportive environment, and Ramapo Ridge Partial-hospitalization Program, a voluntary program providing short-term outpatient treatment to adults experiencing severe symptoms. It is often the next step after discharge from Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital, providing a smoother transition back into the community and daily activities.
