Sept. 11: Several Bergen County Towns Plan Memorial Events Monday

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Two decades after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the losses of nearly 3,000 Americans are still felt, and their grandchildren are now learning about the attacks in history class.

Official sources say that approximately 2,977 people died due to the terrorist attacks on that day, and more than 2,000 others have since died of illnesses related to toxic exposure.

Of those killed on that day, officials say that more than 700 were from New Jersey.

Many were young employees of the World Trade Center. Some were on the planes, including Todd Beamer, one of several who were believed to have hatched a plan to overpower the terrorists on United Flight 93.

Among Bergen County towns, Ridgewood lost 12 residents. CBS visited a remembrance for one of those residents, Jon Vandevander, a father of three, back in September 2001. The video begins with Vandevander's favorite Bruce Springsteen tune.

In Bergen County, several ceremonies are planned for Monday to honor those who died and those who responded and fought for freedom.

Among the ceremonies:

  • Bergen County: A ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. at the county's 9/11 Monument, Overpeck County Park, Leonia. All are invited. Get the details here.
  • Township of Washington: The town will hold a ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Township of Washington Memorial Monument (in front of town hall on Pascack Rd). Details are here.
  • Rivervale: Rivervale's candlelight ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park (next to the library) on Monday at 7 p.m. They note, "All are welcome to attend!"
  • Saddle Brook: Saddle Brook's ceremony will be held Monday at 5:30 p.m.
  • Montvale's ceremony will be Monday at 7 p.m.
  • Check individual town calendars for other ceremonies on Monday, and rain dates.
