The Wyckoff Peddler: A True Labor of Love

Local shop with unique wares treats customers with special care.

Even before entering the shop, a sweet aromatic combination of potpourri and fresh candles gently beckon from within the cozy building that houses the Wyckoff Peddler in Franklin Lakes.

A warm, country Americana style shop located at 861 Franklin Ave, the nearly 50-year-old gift and home décor specialty store is brimming with a dizzying array of unique gifts and jewelry.

“It takes us a really long time to decide what to sell,” said co-owner Eileen Kuipers. “We’re very particular -- we’ll only carry the highest quality.”

Owned and operated for the last 15 years by co-owners Eileen Kuipers and Sharon Spoelstra, the shop is a clear reflection of their warmth and creativity. From hand picking every item to special ordering hand- painted wine bottles for customers, running the Peddler is a way of life more than an occupation for both women.

“We really love what we do,” said Spoelstra, “and we have the most unbelievable customers. Even if we’re not making much of a profit on certain things, we’re happy if we can make our customers happy.”

Carrying “Made in America” products is a staple at the Peddler, and there’s always a large selection of products to choose from including glassware made by local artists as well as larger U.S. companies such as Yankee Candles and Country Junction Soy Candles. Among the most unique and popular items carried at the Peddler is the Pennsylvania-based Byers’ Choice Carolers, collectible figurines only available seasonally as the holidays approach.

“We want to offer the most variety possible at the best prices we can,” said Kuipers. “So if something is not made in America, we make sure it’s still high quality and unique.”

In addition to its support of local artists and USA made products, the Peddler extends itself globally by carrying free-trade products such as handmade necklaces from Kenya made of weaved grass and purses crafted of recycled magazines.

Despite their loyal customer base, however, Spoelstra and Kuipers recognize the effects of the strained economy and are determined to help make holiday shopping easier. To kick off the season, their annual “Black Friday” sale will offer 30 percent off the entire stock from 7-9 a.m. on Friday, November 25, as well as serving fresh bagels and hot coffee. There will also be a “Girls Night Out” on Thursday, December 15 for last-minute shopping from 5-8 p.m.  All merchandise will be 20 percent off.

“We love our customers and we become very close to everyone who shops here,” said Kuipers. “If someone comes in with a problem, we’ll tell them we will include them in our prayers.”
