The state overhauled the contaminated-site cleanup program and phased in the Licensed Site Remediation Professional program (LSRP) in 2012. The program is designed to help clear the state’s 20,000 known contaminated site cases in New Jersey. All the sites are listed under that program.
"The LSRP program is unequivocally working and working very well. We have somebody on the ground at virtually every site across the site," said Larry Hajna, a DEP spokesperson. "The sites have been evaluated for any potential off-site impacts. Everything we know about is contained and under the oversight of either an LSRP, the state, or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."
At the end of April, there were about 14,200 cases remaining and of those, licensed site remediation professionals are overseeing the cleanup of 11,000 of the sites, including many in Bergen County. Many of the remaining cases are residential underground oil tanks, cases overseen directly by the state or federal government, including Superfund sites, and cases that are closed but are awaiting permits to monitor residual contamination.
