Memorial Day: Wyckoff Honors Veterans With Moment Of Silence

Customary Memorial Day events have been cancelled, but the township will release a video tribute on the township's website.

WYCKOFF, NJ — Customary Memorial Day events are cancelled due to COVID-19, but the township has other plans to honor Wyckoff veterans.

According to a release from the Memorial Day Parade Committee, a tribute video — put together by the Memorial Day Parade Committee — will be posted on the Wyckoff / Midland Park VFW Facebook page (VFW Post 7086) on Sunday, May 24th by 10 a.m.

The township is planning a Memorial Day Salute on Monday, May 25 at 12 p.m.

The Wyckoff Police and Volunteer Fire Department, along with the local churches, will sound their alarms and ring their bells at 11:59 a.m., according to the release. The parade committee volunteers ask that all Wyckoff residents fly an American flag and join in a moment of silence at 12 p.m.

Mayor Tim Shanley also announced in a letter to the community that he will be releasing a video message on Friday morning. The holiday has an even more special meaning this year, he wrote.

"It becomes especially special to me as my youngest brother was advised by the Army yesterday that he is being promoted from Lt. Colonel to Colonel. I could not be more proud of my brother, Michael Shanley, who is at Fort Bragg in North Carolina," wrote Shanley.

In addition to these events, the township has released an "honor roll" of names of residents who have died in time of war. The names are inscribed on the township's cenotaph, located in the green of the Wyckoff Reformed Church at 590 Wyckoff Ave.
