Wyckoff Paints Blue Line In Support Of Police Department

Township is the latest Bergen County municipality to support its cops by painting a line down the center of town.

WYCKOFF, N.J. — A blue line was painted down the center of Franklin Avenue Tuesday as a way of recognizing of honoring what the police department does to keep residents safe everyday.

The blue line is located on Franklin Avenue from Wyckoff to Godwin avenues.

"Painting a blue line in Wyckoff is a symbolically tangible way in which we can show our on-going support for them," said Rudy Boonstra, township committeeman and deputy police commissioner.

Several other North Jersey municipalities, including Wayne and Fair Lawn, have painted similar lines to show their respect for their police departments.

"Wyckoff is honored to have such a dedicated group of police officers that work tirelessly to keep Wyckoff a safe and vibrant community for our residents and businesses," said John A. Carolan, township road commissioner. "Their job is not easy, but they go to work everyday to serve our community with distinction."

Acting Police Chief David Murphy said the department appreciates the community's "unfailing" attention to law enforcement.

"Once again, our township officials have set the bar high for the show of support to our police department," Murphy said.

It has been a tumultuous year for the department.

Murphy is running the department since Chief Benjamin C. Fox stepped down in March while the state Attorney General's Office investigates an email he allegedly sent in 2014 encouraging racial profiling.

Mayor Kevin J. Rooney encouraged residents to thank police officers when they see them.

"A simple 'thank you' can mean the world to so many," Rooney said.
