With this thought we ease out of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and turn our attention to November and Diabetes:

The one thing many of these devastating diseases have in common is how to prevent them.

Find out what's happening in Albuquerquefor free with the latest updates from Patch.

If you Google "ways to reduce the risk for cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obesity", you'll get a list similar to this: exercise regularly, eat a diet rich in vegetables, legumes, healthy grains, eat less meat, reduce sugar/alcohol intake, quit smoking, strive for 7-9 hours of sleep on average, and practice ways to manage stress. Some of these preventable chronic illnesses follow each other like a pack of girls heading to the restroom. Meaning, when you get one, more will follow.

Type 2 diabetes is a preventable chronic illness that affects 29.1 million people -  that is one out of 11! One out of four people don't know they have it. Diabetes leads to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure (both of these conditions can also lead to diabetes) blindness, neuropathy, amputations, and kidney failure.

If we learned anything over the last year and a half, it is that the better we take care of our health - overall - the less risk we have for any preventable chronic illness as well as complications from COVID.

The good news is, improving our health doesn't have to be hard and we don't have to do it alone. Simple daily changes can make a big impact on our health. Below are free APS Employee Wellness resources to help prevent illness, manage stress, boost immunity and well-being.
