1. Albuquerque brings back popular Route 790 for students (koat.com) — Albuquerque has restarted Route 790, the high-demand school-year bus line connecting the Northwest Transit Center and Cottonwood Mall area to UNM and CNM, with free rides for students. Running 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., it's aimed at easing campus parking hassles and helping students and staff commute more easily as classes resume.
2. 4 Investigates: Feds to take a new look at DEA Fentanyl Fallout in New Mexico (kob.com subscription) — Federal watchdogs are launching a new review of DEA fentanyl investigations with a special focus on New Mexico, including cases where agents allegedly let fentanyl pills circulate through Albuquerque neighborhoods near Wilson Middle School. A whistleblower-backed letter has prompted Rep. Melanie Stansbury to seek briefings and public hearings, while state and federal investigators press for DEA records that have yet to be turned over.
3. 2 commanders removed from posts in New Mexico Air National Guard (militarytimes.com) — Leadership at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque just shifted, with the commander of the 150th Special Operations Wing relieved of duty and his deputy reassigned. New interim leaders are in place, and Guard officials stress that training and mission readiness for the wing's roughly 900 personnel in Albuquerque and statewide will continue without disruption.
4. NM Democratic Party secretary sues over alleged illegal removal from post (abqjournal.com subscription) — A former Democratic Party of New Mexico secretary is suing in Albuquerque's 2nd Judicial District Court, claiming top party officials illegally removed her from her elected post. The lawsuit, which alleges rule violations and follows earlier discrimination complaints, comes just weeks before early voting and highlights internal tensions as Democrats head into the general election.
5. Reports suggest the NM DOW is euthanizing bears that have migrated into neighborhoods an relocating others (koat.com) — Bears are increasingly wandering into Albuquerque-area neighborhoods as drought and extreme heat push them to seek food and water in cities, raising safety concerns. State wildlife officials are relocating some animals and euthanizing others deemed too habituated to urban areas, while animal advocates urge residents not to feed bears to avoid deadly outcomes.
