1. Albuquerque shops team up with police to prevent crime before it starts (kob.com) — Albuquerque police say their new "Adopt A Business" program has cut damage and vandalism by 29% in one northeast area by pairing neighborhood officers with local shops. Business owners like the Happy Cat Hotel report fewer problems near the arroyo and easier access to officers as APD looks to expand the relationship-based approach.
2. Judge extends firearm restrictions for Ventana Ranch man accused of harassment (kob.com) — A local judge has extended temporary firearm restrictions on a Ventana Ranch resident while an extreme risk protection order is considered, after allegations involving an Albuquerque police officer and a Bernalillo County sheriff's employee. The man remains jailed until a September 25 hearing, and the alleged victims are also seeking an order to keep him away.
3. Stansbury secures $7.6 million for Albuquerque affordable housing programs (abqjournal.com subscription) — Federal funding is bringing $7.6 million to Albuquerque-focused affordable housing efforts, including a new homeless youth center and a senior stability shelter run by the city. Additional money supports the Veterans Integration Center and local nonprofit Saranam, while a new bipartisan housing law aims to boost construction and limit large investors buying family homes.
4. City of Albuquerque plans to potentially redevelop empty plot of land move forward (krqe.com) — City leaders are advancing a zoning change that could turn a long-vacant three-acre lot at Lomas and Broadway near downtown Albuquerque into mixed-use housing and retail. The Environmental Planning Commission backed the shift despite neighborhood traffic concerns, sending the proposal to City Council for a final decision.
5. A Parliament of Trees, with artist Brian Stinson (cabq.gov) — An upcoming exhibition at Albuquerque's Open Space Visitor Center will showcase plein air painter Brian Stinson's work inspired by the Rio Grande bosque and its cottonwoods. Running October 2 through November 14, the show explores the beauty and vulnerability of this local landscape, with an opening reception planned for the evening of October 2.
