1. Albuquerque launches 3 water projects to triple supply amid Rio Grande drought (kob.com) — Albuquerque is launching three major water projects, including two new aquifer facilities, to triple its current billion-gallon underground supply as the Rio Grande runs dry through town. Crews are also preparing a new water reclamation plant near Bosque School to boost reuse for parks and golf courses. Residents can learn more and give feedback at a Water Authority public meeting on Sept. 1.
2. One year after audit, Albuquerque Community Safety details updates to training and resources (abqjournal.com subscription) — Albuquerque Community Safety says it has revamped training, added new safety alerts, and worked more closely with 311, 911 and police after an audit flagged responder safety and slow call handling. The department, whose budget and call volume have surged, still faces challenges finding immediate shelter and locating unsheltered people, but leaders insist responders can decline unsafe calls and escalate housing issues for faster solutions.
3. Albuquerque Public Schools add weapons detectors, tighten clear bag policy at stadiums (kob.com) — Heading into the 2026 football season, Albuquerque Public Schools are rolling out new weapons-detection scanners and tightening their clear bag rules at district stadiums like Wilson, Milne, and Community. Fans will pass through gray detector towers and must stick to smaller clear bags, though chairbacks and umbrellas are still allowed. APS says the goal is to match safety standards at UNM and Isotopes games while keeping crowds comfortable.
4. New 'The Green Book' exhibit in Albuquerque highlights stories of African Americans on Route 66 (krqe.com) — A new free exhibit in Albuquerque explores how "The Green Book" helped Black travelers navigate segregation-era Route 66, balancing the promise of the open road with real dangers. Curated by the city's public art team, it runs weekdays through September 25 and aims to preserve often-overlooked local and national history while sparking conversations about travel, safety and civil rights.
5. New Mexico schools can enroll for 2027 Scripps National Spelling Bee (abqjournal.com subscription) — Albuquerque families should know that New Mexico's path to the 2027 Scripps National Spelling Bee runs through the Albuquerque Journal State Spelling Bee, with enrollment now open for schools statewide. Any school with students in grades 1 and up to age 15 can register, and top spellers will advance through district, online state qualifying, and an in-person bee in Albuquerque.
