📰 News we're reading

1. Some US cities have begun rewarding careful drivers with fewer red lights (techxplore.com) — Drivers on Lead and Coal in Albuquerque are seeing fewer red lights if they stick to the speed limit, thanks to a new "rest on red" signal program credited with sharply reducing crashes. The system rewards law-abiding drivers with earlier greens, while speeders trigger more stops, and city officials say the approach could expand to other corridors if results hold.

2. Argument over green chile enchiladas leads to man being shot to death (newsradiokkob.com) — Albuquerque police say a dispute over the spiciness of green chile enchiladas at a Northeast apartment ended in a deadly shooting late Thursday. Detectives arrested 22-year-old Ervin Gutierrez, who later turned himself in Downtown, and he now faces an open count of murder while being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

3. City brings sandy fun to Albuquerque at newly unveiled Vista Beach (koat.com) — Families in Albuquerque's North Valley now have a new "Vista Beach" play area at Vista del Norte Park, complete with watered sand for sandcastles, rock features, and shaded seating. Funded by state grants and city bonds, the project emphasizes nature play and even includes signs about New Mexico's ancient shoreline, giving kids a fresh way to enjoy the outdoors close to home.

4. Two men charged after children found sweating in car outside Albuquerque bar, police say (koat.com) — Albuquerque police say two men are charged with child abuse and abandonment after officers found two children sweating in a car outside the Dirty Bourbon bar early Saturday. Security reportedly broke a window to get the kids out, and one suspect told officers he stayed longer than planned because people kept asking him to dance.

5. Lobos women's soccer holds off CSUN for 3-2 victory (krqe.com) — UNM's women's soccer team notched a 3-2 home win in Albuquerque, edging Cal State Northridge after nearly surrendering a two-goal lead. The Lobos struck early on a penalty and added a second before CSUN rallied, but New Mexico's defense held strong to secure another home victory as the season moves forward.
