📰 News we're reading

1. New HAWK signal installed near two Albuquerque schools (koat.com) — A new HAWK signal at Kathryn Avenue and San Mateo Boulevard is now helping Albuquerque students cross more safely near Whittier Elementary and Wilson Middle School. When pedestrians push the button, drivers see yellow, then solid red, then flashing red lights, improving safety for kids and others using this busy southeast Albuquerque intersection.

2. Balloon Fiesta brings back 'X Marks the Spot' for safe landings (kob.com subscription) — Albuquerque landowners are being asked to help Balloon Fiesta pilots land safely by joining the revived "X Marks the Spot" program. If you've got about an acre of open space, you can pick up a free white X marker at several Albuquerque and nearby locations, register it, and even become eligible for a prize if a balloon lands there.

3. Could More Green Lights Be the Key To Slowing Drivers Down? (familyhandyman.com) — Drivers on Albuquerque's Lead and Coal Avenues are already seeing 'rest in red' traffic signals that stay red until approaching cars at safe speeds trigger earlier green lights, part of a broader push to calm traffic. City officials say pairing this timing with automated speed enforcement could cut serious crashes, while researchers nationwide study where and how the strategy works best.

4. Blue Mass held to honor first responders in New Mexico (krqe.com) — Albuquerque residents joined first responders and faith leaders at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church for the 17th annual Blue Mass honoring those who serve across New Mexico. During the service, Mayor Tim Keller proclaimed September 17, 2026, as Archbishop John Wester Day in Albuquerque, recognizing his decades of ministry and advocacy as he prepares for retirement.

5. Sandia eyes larger Z machine to expand nuclear weapons testing capabilities (kob.com) — Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque are exploring plans for a Z Machine up to ten times larger than the current facility to better simulate nuclear weapons conditions without live detonations. While still theoretical and awaiting federal interest and funding, the project would deepen the lab's national security role and keep cutting-edge research anchored in the city.
