Balloon Fiesta brings crowds and spending to Albuquerque businesses (koat.com) — Albuquerque businesses are seeing a major boost this week as Balloon Fiesta crowds pour into vendor row, Old Town, and local shops, with some stores tripling their usual sales. Vendors describe the intense preparation and big financial risk that pays off when weather cooperates. With the final weekend still ahead, many are bracing for even larger crowds and receipts.
2. University of New Mexico students gather together for rally amid Cornell 7 case (krqe.com) — University of New Mexico students in Albuquerque rallied Wednesday morning to call out rape culture on campus in response to the high-profile Cornell 7 case. Hundreds marched along Central near UNM, using the moment to push for change at their own institution and to align with similar student actions nationwide.
3. UNM College of Pharmacy to Offer Free Health Services (cabq.gov) — Albuquerque seniors and other residents can get free flu shots and health screenings on Friday, Oct. 16, thanks to a partnership between the city's Department of Senior Affairs and UNM's College of Pharmacy. Services will be offered at four Senior Affairs centers across town plus Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless. The event is open to everyone and aims to make preventive care more accessible.
4. Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta celebrates 30 years at Balloon Fiesta Park (kob.com) — Albuquerque residents are celebrating 30 years of the International Balloon Fiesta at Balloon Fiesta Park, now firmly established as the event's long-term home. City leaders highlight new investments, including buying a key parking lot, flood-control berm work, ADA access, upgraded utilities, and permanent restrooms. Organizers say the park's design and location make it ideal for the Fiesta's future.
