1. Albuquerque Firm Chosen to Design Future of State Fairgrounds (newsradiokkob.com) — A local firm, Hartman + Majewski Design Group, has been picked to craft the long-term master plan for redeveloping the New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque's International District. The project could add housing, green space, and possibly a stadium while supporting hundreds of jobs, but neighbors are voicing concerns about traffic, rising housing costs, and potential gentrification and displacement.
2. 2 injured in explosion at apartments in NE Albuquerque (newsradiokkob.com) — Two people were hurt after an explosion rocked an apartment complex on Central Avenue NE in Northeast Albuquerque, forcing the evacuation of several units. Albuquerque Fire Rescue, New Mexico Gas Company, and the Police Bomb Squad secured the scene, checked the building's stability, and shut off gas service while investigators work to determine what caused the blast.
3. Albuquerque park closures spark protest over impact on unhoused people (kob.com) — New daily closure hours at Albuquerque's Robinson Park are drawing pushback from advocates who say the rules further displace unhoused residents who rely on the space. Protesters held a sit-in during one of the closure windows, while city officials cite overuse, maintenance needs, and drug activity as reasons for the schedule change and say they're still evaluating how long it will stay in place.
4. Bernalillo County seeks artist for project at new fire station (krqe.com) — Bernalillo County is commissioning public art for the new Fire & Rescue Station 36 on Edith NE in Albuquerque's North Valley, and regional artists can apply for the $80,000 project. The work should honor the station's service to North Valley residents and will be installed at the Community Risk Reduction Center, with applications due by late October.
5. Balloon pilots swap evening Glow for Candlestick event due to wind (koat.com) — If you were headed to Balloon Fiesta for Saturday night's Night Magic Glow in Albuquerque, organizers instead staged a Candlestick event because of sustained high winds on the field. Pilots lit only their propane burners, creating a fiery display before a scheduled Russell Dickerson concert, drone light show, and fireworks for tens of thousands of attendees.
