Dental Exam Required For New Student Enrollment At Albuquerque Public Schools

A new state law requires that students who are new to New Mexico public school districts or charter schools, including kindergarteners, show that they have been to the dentist within the past year.

Families may opt out of this requirement through ParentVUEExternal link , Albuquerque Public Schools' online registration system.

Beginning Aug. 1, the families of students enrolling for the first time in APS will receive an email asking that they go to the Parent Acknowledgement on Dental Records section of ParentVUE to either upload confirmation of their child's dental exam or choose to opt out.

The Parent Acknowledgement on Dental Records reads: "Please note that early and regular dental care helps prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating, and other medical issues."

If families click YES, they acknowledge that their child has had a dental exam before the start of the new school year. They have the option of uploading dental documents or skipping that step.

If families click NO, they opt out of the requirement for providing APS with information on their child's dental exams before initially enrolling in APS.
