Here are the top stories today in Albuquerque:

  1. Vandals are dangerously close to killing a cluster of endangered agaves at the ABQ Botanic Garden's Desert Conservatory. BioPark officials say people have been carving their names and initials into the Agave titanota, threatening the health and conservation of the species. The vandalism not only hurts the aesthetic of the agaves, but the damaged plants are also now suffering from scale, a disease that impacts stressed plants and weakens them. BioPark is working to install security cameras. (KOAT New Mexico)
  2. Balloon safety advocate, David Tanzer, says the Albuquerque crash that killed five people in June could have been avoided. The pilot's toxicology report showed that he had marijuana and cocaine in his system. Tanzer is advocating for medical checks, a letter of authorization, and more rules for balloon pilots. (KOB)
  3. The 100-year-old Kimo Theatre closed last year due to the pandemic and has faced renovations that were done without compromising the historic building's exterior. Renovations are almost complete. (KRQE News 13)
  4. USPS installs a high-speed sorting machine that sorts around 3,000 packages an hour, that's 12 times faster than sorting by hand. (KRQE News 13)
  5. According to Albuquerque Police, a pedestrian was killed on I-40 Wednesday night after throwing rocks at cars then running into traffic and getting hit by several cars. (KOB)
