🌱 Gun Safety To Protect Kids + Council For Helping The Homeless

The latest on what's happening in Albuquerque, delivered straight to your inbox — for free!

Good day, neighbors! It's me again, Rachel Kilimnik, your host of the Albuquerque Daily.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sun. High: 62 Low: 39.

Here are the top stories in Albuquerque today:

  1. City leaders are encouraging gun owners to store their firearms in a safe place in an effort called Project ChildSafe Secure Albuquerque. On Wednesday, the city was giving out free gun locks, and police were showing people how to keep their guns stored safely. The city is working with the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Project Childsafe, a national firearm safety program. Organizers say the safe keeping of guns can help prevent accidents involving children, thefts, and suicides. (KRQE News 13)
  2. Bernalillo County's Homeless Coordinating Council met Tuesday morning and discussed what could be a new, winning strategy. Albuquerque's Family and Community Services Department estimates there are roughly 1,100 unhoused people every night, and about a third of those are on the streets. The city and county are both brainstorming solutions – including new shelters and housing projects – but officials admit the ball could be moving faster. Members of the homeless coordinating council are pushing to create a multi-governmental group to oversee projects in the metro. They said one unified voice could really help secure funding from state lawmakers. (KOB)
  3. Albuquerque Police Department officers want to bring back a team like the one known as the Party Patrol or Party Intervention Team in response to the rise in parties that have turned violent or deadly in Albuquerque. (KOAT New Mexico)
  4. For the past 20 years, the city of Albuquerque has been using a building it doesn't own. They haven't paid rent and now they are suing a nonprofit group that only exists on paper to get the building. (KOAT New Mexico)
  5. An Albuquerque balloon pilot was sentenced Tuesday in federal court for child exploitation charges. (KOB)
