Hello, people of Albuquerque! Rachel Kilimnik here with a brand-new issue of the Albuquerque Daily.
First, today's weather:
Abundant sunshine and mild. High: 73 Low: 44.
Here are the top stories today in Albuquerque:
- Care workers in the Emergency Department at the University of New Mexico are dealing with two public health crises: COVID and the rising levels of gun violence. UNMH is home to the state's only level one trauma center, which means they care for the most severely injured patients including gunshot victims. Dr. Steven McLaughlin, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of New Mexico Hospital, says he feels for his colleagues who are dealing with what feels like whiplash, handling both COVID-19 patients and gunshot victims. He adds it's been especially hard on trauma nurses who are also now experiencing increased levels of PTSD. (KOAT New Mexico)
- The city is urging developers to consider Albuquerque's specific climate and surroundings when they design large buildings. City planners have added a section to the Integrated Development Ordinance (IDO), calling on building designers to report how they considered effects like sun, shade, and natural views. They say this will not only make buildings more sustainable and cheaper to heat and cool, but also more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. (KRQE News 13)
- A recent conditional use decision gives the City of Albuquerque permission to move forward with plans for an overnight homeless shelter at the Gateway Center. To get approval, the city had to demonstrate the emergency shelter would not have a negative impact on surrounding neighborhoods.(KOB)
- During an online candidate forum held on Oct. 7, the current alternate municipal judge for the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque and patent attorney Diane Albert was showing what citizens call "odd" behavior. (KOB)
- The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested two more suspects involved in shooting out the windows of the county's downtown headquarters. (KRQE News 13)
