🌱Gun Violence Victim Parade Float + Panhandler Ordinance Blocked

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Albuquerque.

Happy Monday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

Pleasant with sunshine. High: 54 Low: 36.

Here are the top stories in Albuquerque today:

  1. Over 100 floats lit up Central Avenue at Albuquerque's Twinkle Light Parade on Saturday, including a first-of-its-kind float honoring local victims of gun violence. The float, called "Angels Afloat," was designed by a nonprofit group known as the New Mexico Crusaders for Justice to remember loved ones lost to gun violence in the Duke City. A record 105 homicides have been reported in the city in 2021, and some of the victims' families were behind this touching tribute float. (KOAT Albuquerque)
  2. A federal court has blocked a 2017 Albuquerque ordinance that would have stopped panhandlers from standing on medians or on the side of the highway. The ordinance was aimed at preventing pedestrian deaths but was ruled unconstitutional by the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in Colorado for violating people's First Amendment rights. Albuquerque police say there have been 30 pedestrian deaths this year, primarily among homeless panhandlers, and with the ordinance blocked, the City is exploring measures like mobile speed enforcement and targeted road improvement projects "to make our streets safer for everyone." (KOB)
  3. Catalytic converter thefts have risen significantly across New Mexico, with dozens of thefts per month reported in multiple counties. (Albuquerque Journal)
  4. Police are currently seeking information about a Friday night shooting and attempted carjacking at the Eagle Ranch Apartments in northwest Albuquerque. (KRQE News 13)
  5. The New Mexico Philarmonic will be performing Handel's Messiah with the Coro Lux Chamber Chorus on Dec. 10 and 11 at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church (114 Carlisle Blvd SE). Click the link for more details. (Albuquerque Patch)
