Here are the top stories today in Albuquerque:
- Incumbent Mayor Tim Keller may be leading the polls in the race for mayor but his approval rating is dropping among voters. According to the latest Albuquerque Journal poll, 50% of voters approve of the job Keller is doing. A year ago it was 60%. The last time a mayor ran for re-election was Richard J. Berry in 2013. At the time he had an approval rating of 63%. That's thirteen points higher than Keller's. (KOAT New Mexico)
- A major cleanup happened at a pop-up used car lot in northwest Albuquerque. For years, neighbors near Coors and I-40 say used cars have constantly lined the dirt lot drawing unwanted traffic, vandalism and illegal activity. The New Mexico Department of Transportation said it worked with state police to enforce the no parking signs, ticketing and then towing vehicles off the lot. (KRQE News 13)
- Homeless individuals have set up an encampment near an Albuquerque spa, causing many problems and the owners to say they're scared to go to work. Now, the situation is escalating and just recently, one of the people living at the camp tried breaking into their spa. (KRQE News 13)
- AFR has to wait to respond to a scene that involves a violent crime, until the police department gives word that it is secure. The Albuquerque Area Firefighters Union President Justin Cheney says sometimes that wait is challenging. (KOB)
- A man was charged with homicide in the Monday night death of his Metropolitan Detention Center cellmate. (KOB)
