Here are the top stories in Albuquerque today:
- The family of one of the victims in the deadly Albuquerque balloon crash has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the estate of pilot, Nick Meleski, and two balloon companies he was associated with. The family filed the lawsuit on Thursday, just one day after KOAT received a toxicology report showing that Meleski had THC and a near-fatal amount of cocaine in his system at the time of autopsy. The lawsuit names three defendants in their suit: Hot Air Balloonatics LLC, Sventato LLC, and the Meleski Estate. (KOAT New Mexico)
- Groups of people gathered at Civic Plaza Thursday afternoon to honor victims of violent crimes. The event came two days before Sept. 25, officially known as National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims. An estimated 350 names of homicide victims were read on stage, with incidents ranging from road rage to physical fights. The city of Albuquerque marked 2021 as its busiest and deadliest year of crime so far. (KOAT New Mexico)
- The Albuquerque Police Department held a news conference Thursday, providing more details about a pursuit that ended with two officers shooting and killing a suspected car thief along a busy street last month. (KOB)
- Nearly $3 million has been set aside as the city of Albuquerque explores ways to boost revitalization efforts in the Downtown area. (Albuquerque Business First)
- Police are searching for a homeless man, 43-year-old Jody Beal, accused of burglarizing three Albuquerque schools this month. (KRQE News 13)
