Month-Long Pet Supply Drive to Help Local Animal Shelters
Local Credit Union to Help Gather Needed Supplies

We’re all grateful for the ways animal shelters can help local strays and other animals - but what happens when the animal shelters need our help?
Most of us consider animal shelters a necessary and helpful part of our communities without ever really stopping to consider how they get things done, or where they get their supplies from. While it may come as a surprise, the vast majority of animal shelters have to rely on external donations and/or funding sources to stay in operation.
As defined by Learning to Give, most animal shelters work as non-profit agencies that rely on funding from either government agencies or external sources such as donations to help keep them in action. Not only do these donations help the employees and the facilities of the animal shelters, they also make a huge difference in the lives of the animals being kept in these shelters, in many cases even sparing their lives. A study by Rutgers University showed that an increase in funding and supplies can directly impact the number of animals the shelter can take in (and, accordingly, the number of animals they can adopt out), and with better-equipped shelters, fewer animals may pass away or be euthanized in captivity.

These donations and supplies have to come from somewhere, though, and as more shelters reach capacity, the communities they serve have begun to offer their aid to help them stay operational and give their animals the best care possible. For the month of February, local credit union U.S. Eagle is holding a pet supply drive at each of their branch locations for a number of needed items, including:
- Blankets
- Towels
- Gloves (sterile, surgical)
- Kitchen sponges
- Lysol spray
- Large trash bags
- Bath towels
- Bed Sheets
- Pet Food
- Toys
All donations of these and other needed items will be distributed to a number of pet shelters throughout New Mexico and the Greater Albuquerque Area, including the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter, the Valencia County Animal Shelter, and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society.
