Here are the top stories today in Albuquerque and nearby communities:
- The number of gunshot victims treated at the University of New Mexico Hospital has increased in recent years and 2021 is on pace to continue the trend. Data from UNMH shows it's treating a rising number of New Mexico's shooting victims with injuries, including 516 people in 2020, up from 80 in 2019. The first six months of 2021 saw 307 shooting victims seeking treatment at UNMH. To help, the Albuquerque Police Department is now looking at launching another gun safety campaign. (KRQE News 13)
- Police have arrested Armando Zamora of Silver City who they say killed his wife with an ax and left her body in the Gila National Forest. Erica Zamora, 39, was reported missing on Oct. 1 by her family. According to the affidavit, police narrowed in on Armando as a suspect because while he initially said he had dropped Erica off at her house, a GPS monitor he was wearing proved otherwise. - 400 refugees will be resettled in New Mexico with Albuquerque receiving 200. (KOB)
- Dylan Jenkins found a hispid cotton rat on the campus of Bosque School. This type of rat has never before been spotted in Bernalillo County. (KRQE News 13)
- A mental health expert explains children and their destructive viral TikTok challenges that have made their way to New Mexico. Parents are urged to talk to their children and open a dialogue regarding these pranks. (KOB)
