Here are the top stories today in Albuquerque:
- The city of Albuquerque and property owners are waiting for answers regarding the site of a possible soccer stadium. The two preferred locations, Coal Avenue SE and Broadway Boulevard SE and 2nd Street SW and Iron Avenue SW, are surrounded by a mix of residential, retail and industrial parcels. Should voters give the bond proposal a thumbs up in November, construction on the stadium could start in seven to nine months after the vote. Under the bond proposal, the project could be paid for through refinancing previous bonds and issuing a $50 million gross receipts tax bond. (Albuquerque Business First).
- Defendants awaiting trial in Bernalillo County are to be monitored 24/7 from now on. The New Mexico Judiciary has announced the implementation of a plan next month to track ankle devices on felony defendants around-the-clock. GPS monitoring devices set off an alert if a defendant has left house arrest, violated curfew, travels to an off-limits area or tampered with the device. If staff receive a "high alert," they will call the defendant and determine if there was a violation of pretrial release. (U.S. News & World Report)
- The Albuquerque City Council voted unanimously on Monday evening for a 12-month zero fare pilot program on the ABQ RIDE system starting on Jan. 1, 2022. (KOB)
- KOAT has created a map with the information from APD's charts and found that, while homicides were scattered around the city, there were clusters of homicides consolidated within a few Albuquerque neighborhoods. (KOAT New Mexico)
- City officials say they have not ruled out requiring proof of vaccination at next month's Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in addition to the COVID safety precaution plans already in place. (Albuquerque Journal)
