Here are the top three stories today in Albuquerque:
- On Friday morning, a male suspect died after multiple shootings with deputies in southwest Albuquerque. According to Sheriff Manny Gonzales, multiple suspects were allegedly attempting to "strip a vehicle" then fled deputies who arrived on the scene in the 200 block of Savedra SW. Gonzales reported that the deputies exchanged gunfire with the suspect, which left one unidentified suspect dead inside the vehicle. (KRQE News 13)
- Preparations for Albuquerque's annual Balloon Fiesta are now underway, beginning with a small-scale exhibit celebrating the man who started it all. "Man Above Town," honoring Sid Cutter, opens on Apr. 8 to kick off the festival season. This year's Balloon Fiesta, taking place from Oct. 1-9, will return to the Coronado Center where it all began 50 years ago. The festivities will also include Music Fiesta, for the first time since 2019, as well as a new exhibit at the Balloon Museum called "Canopy of Color." (KOB)
- Residents of Albuquerque's Spruce Park neighborhood are seeking a special designation to help keep its historic properties alive. Neighbors are petitioning the city to create a Historic Overlay Zone, which would add dozens of city rules in the name of historic preservation. "History is something that always you can't replicate or redo something once you've torn it down," said Spruce Park Street Representative Fredi Ziter. "It's important to me that we preserve that or at least we are communicating." (KRQE News 13)
