📰 News we're reading

• United States of America v. Harlan Joe (morelaw.com) — Federal prosecutors say a Navajo Nation man has admitted killing a woman at a Shiprock residence in November 2025 after a day of drinking, and is now facing a second-degree murder charge in U.S. District Court. Investigators reported finding the victim outside the home with clear signs of trauma, and the defendant allegedly told officers he knew his actions were wrong.

• ORR Awards Rural Rec. and Health Grants to Communities (woodallscm.com) — Shiprock youth will benefit from a new Outdoor Recreation Roundtable grant that helps Farmington Area Single Track keep bike programs rolling across San Juan County. A new trailer and 100-bike fleet will travel between Shiprock, Farmington, Aztec, and Bloomfield, breaking down equipment and transportation barriers so more rural kids can ride local trails and join an upcoming All Abilities class.

• New Mexico high school volleyball rankings for Sept. 28, 2026 (abqjournal.com subscription) — Shiprock High's volleyball team is making noise statewide, landing in the Class 3A top 10 with an 8–3 record in the latest coaches' poll. The rankings, released this week, show where Shiprock stacks up against programs from Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and across New Mexico as district play heats up.
