• Socorro County declares emergency as flooding prompts rescues and shelter (dchieftain.com) — Socorro County has formally declared an emergency after heavy rains caused widespread flooding, road closures, and water rescues, and officials are opening shelters and staging sandbags. Finley Gym is serving as an emergency shelter, the Rodeo and Sports Complex is open for evacuated animals, and residents are urged to call listed numbers or the Red Cross if they need help or damage assessments.
   

• NSF NRAO Very Large Array to Host Fall Open House October 10 (nrao.edu) — Residents have a free chance to explore the Very Large Array just 50 miles west of Socorro on Saturday, October 10, with guided tours, science talks, and hands-on activities for all ages. Advance tickets are required, and food trucks and restrooms will be available on-site throughout the day.
   

• Parts of New Mexico could break rainfall records this week (abqjournal.com subscription) — Socorro is included in a wind advisory through early Wednesday, with gusts up to 55 mph that could cause power outages, downed trees, and flying debris. Across New Mexico, saturated ground and more rain could break rainfall records and worsen flooding, so residents are urged to avoid arroyos, watch for flash flooding, and prepare for hazardous travel and weather conditions.
