Introducing UAlbany's Information Science PhD Program Director: 5Qs with Elyse Zavar (albany.edu) — UAlbany has appointed disaster-science scholar Elyse Zavar to direct its Information Science PhD program, bringing fresh leadership and research focus to the Albany campus. She plans to expand the Disaster Studies Lab's work on how communities manage post-disaster land and climate-related relocations, connecting global lessons to how local communities prepare for and recover from hazards.
   

2. Steamboat Square to assist Albany's housing crisis (cbs6albany.com) — Steamboat Square is adding 343 mostly income-based apartments to help ease Albany's housing shortage, with phase one expected to finish by year's end and move-ins targeted for late 2027. The former public housing high-rise now features geothermal heating and a mix of affordable and limited market-rate units, alongside newly renovated low-rise family apartments nearby.
   

3. Trey Anastasio Band Announces November Tour, Albany and Port Chester Shows (nysmusic.com) — Trey Anastasio Band is bringing its November tour to Albany's Palace Theatre on November 12, giving local fans a chance to see the full octet lineup close to home. The tour also includes a Port Chester date and several Northeast stops, with some shows benefiting Anastasio's Divided Sky Foundation. Presale starts September 16 at noon, with remaining tickets released September 18.
   

4. UAlbany teams up with NASA, uses AI to predict power outages (news10.com) — Researchers at UAlbany in Albany are partnering with NASA to use AI and satellite data to predict where damaging winds and power outages are most likely, helping utilities prepare down to the street level. Their work could reduce costly disruptions for New Yorkers, and the university will host a Renewable Energy Pathways Conference on October 1 to explore related climate and grid issues.
   

5. Anderon Finalizes $1 Billion CHIPS Award To Expand U.S. Quantum Wafer Foundry (pulse2.com) — Albany's IBM-affiliated Anderon quantum foundry just secured a $1 billion federal CHIPS award, matched by another $1 billion from IBM, to expand its local 300-millimeter wafer operations. The investment positions Albany as a key hub for quantum chip manufacturing, promising more high-tech research, jobs, and industry partnerships tied to next-generation computing.
