Cyclist Struck, Killed By Driver In Long Island City: NYPD
The 53-year-old man was riding a bike in Hunter's Point, Queens, when a driver struck him, police said.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A car struck and killed a cyclist in Long Island City Thursday morning, police said.
Long Island City resident Robert Spencer, 53, was riding a bike along Borden Ave. in Hunter's Point, Queens, when a 2014 Chevy Cruze traveling south on 2nd St. hit him just before 8 a.m. Thursday.
Spencer was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital Queens, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver, a 51-year-old woman, stayed on the scene.

"We cannot normalize traffic violence and deaths," City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, who represents Long Island City, said in a statement. "They cannot be a forgone conclusion. Cyclists deserve safety on our city’s roads like everyone else."

Concerned Long Island City residents had asked for protected bike lanes along Borden Ave. weeks before the cyclist's death Thursday.
The NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the crash.
