ASTORIA, QUEENS - Dr. Adeeti Gupta was on-call at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in 2014 when the OB/GYN came up with an idea to revolutionize women's health — walk-in clinics, like New York City's myriad urgent care centers, but for gynecological care. Months later, she opened Walk In GYN in Midtown Manhattan, and an Astoria location followed in 2017.

"When you have an issue like a heavy period or pain — or even a simple UTI — you need to be seen right away and you need to be treated right away," Gupta said. "You cannot wait 6 weeks for an appointment."

Gupta, who also practices in Elmhurst, is now gearing up to expand Walk In GYN as one of this year's 60 presidential leadership scholars, a prestigious national program for mid-career professionals in any field. From February to June, the scholars will hone their leadership skills under the tutelage of ex-presidents and their administrations, academics and business leaders.

Using those skills, the scholars develop a project to solve a specific issue in their communities; those project proposals are one of the program's selection criteria, which also include essays and recommendations.

"Meeting various people who all want to do something great and change the world for good in the long-term is amazing," Gupta said.

Gupta declined to discuss her leadership project, but she isn't shy about her ambitions: She plans to bring Walk In GYN to Brooklyn, then hopes to spread the concept across the United States.

The two Walk In GYN locations collectively see about 1,500 women each month. The clinics offer contraceptive counseling, pap smears, STI testing and sonograms. They also treat UTIs, vaginal itch, pelvic pain and irregular or heavy bleeding.

"We're trying to really treat women comprehensively," she said.

The Midtown Manhattan clinic, at 200 West 57th St #608, is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Astoria clinic, at 28-18 Astoria Blvd., is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
