BABYLON, NY — The Babylon Union Free School District has been recognized as one of the top districts in New York for visual arts education.
The district was named a Community of Excellence in Visual Arts winner by the New York State Art Teachers Association, district officials said. The honor, given in its inaugural year, recognized just 26 school districts statewide.
The distinction celebrates districts that show an exceptional commitment to high-quality, comprehensive visual arts programming for students at all grade levels.
Districts were evaluated on six core principles: visual arts instruction, instruction by certified art educators, sequential and standards-based curriculum, inclusivity, equity and accessibility, student opportunities, and support for next-generation artists.
The recognition is modeled after the NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education designation.
In addition, several Babylon student artists were included in NYSATA’s 2026 Legislative Exhibit, a virtual showcase of student artwork from across the state.
“This recognition is a reflection of the care, passion, and dedication our art educators pour into their students every single day,” Babylon Director of Fine Arts Cheryl Schweider said. “They routinely go above and beyond to nurture their students’ artistic talents and encourage them to find their self-expression.”
