BABYLON, NY — Suffolk County police rescued a Copiague family, including a 2-year-old child, after their boat ran aground in the Fire Island Inlet overnight, police said.

A 30-year-old man, his 30-year-old wife, their 2-year-old son and the child's 62-year-old grandfather were aboard a 25-foot Parker boat when it ran aground during low tide Saturday night and became stranded near the mouth of the inlet, police said.

The child's mother called 911 at about 11:22 p.m., according to police.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau Officers Keith Miller and Robert King responded aboard Marine Juliet but were unable to get within a half-mile of the stranded boat, police said.

Officers Rob Jenkins and James Matriciano then transported Marine Hovercraft Tango to Oak Beach, where they launched the vessel and reached the family.

Police began removing the family from the stranded boat at about 1:52 a.m. Sunday.

The officers brought the family to the New York State Boat Basin. The 2-year-old was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

No other family members were injured.
