WEST BABYLON, NY — A West Babylon firefighter who rescued an unconscious person from a burning home without protective gear has been named Firefighter of the Year for Suffolk County's 14th Legislative District.
Peter Daniele, a 15-year member of the West Babylon Fire Department, was recognized by Suffolk County Legislator Richard "RJ" Renna during the Legislature's annual Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Ceremony on Sept. 16, at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge.
Daniele was driving home on Jan. 9, 2025, when he detected an odor consistent with a structure fire, according to Renna's office.
After investigating, he discovered a house fire and received reports that elderly residents might still be inside.
Daniele entered the burning home, where he encountered heavy smoke and flames. Despite having no firefighting gear or respiratory protection, he located an unconscious person on the floor and carried the victim out of the building.
The victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in serious condition.
For his actions, Daniele is also expected to receive the Suffolk County Vocational Education and Extension Board's Class 1 Medal later this year.
"It is my honor to recognize Firefighter Peter Daniele as my firefighter of the year," Renna said. "Peter has been a dedicated member of the West Babylon Fire Department for 15 years, and the heroism he displayed in January 2025 is worthy of great recognition. I thank him and all of our volunteer firefighters for what they do - they are the true backbone of our local community."
