Babylon Commends Class Of 2020 Valedictorian And Salutatorian
Babylon Union Free School District recognizes 2019-20's valedictorian and salutatorian.

Babylon Union Free School District is proud to announce that seniors Anna Romero Mejia and Katherine Hannon have been named valedictorian and salutatorian for the 2019-20 academic school year, respectively. Both students earned these honors by way of their exceptional academic records, commitment to success and diligent work ethic throughout their high school careers.

According to Principal Al Cirone, valedictorian Anna Romero Mejia “is open-minded and loves to be challenged,” adding that she “is right and left brained; she has a mathematical mind but is also extremely artistic and creative.” On top of her many achievements during the academic years, Romero Mejia has also spent her summers in meaningful ways, volunteering at Camp Good Grief, a camp for children who have lost loved ones, and participating in University of Chicago’s three-week physics program. Romero Mejia will attend Brown University in the fall, studying physics on a full scholarship through the prestigious QuestBridge award.
Of salutatorian Katherine Hannon, Cirone said, “Her passions lie in the field of social studies as she is intrigued by world policy and is always exploring ways to better the world in which we live.” As a sophomore, Hannon traveled to Spain to volunteer with Diverbo Global, teaching English to Spanish-speaking children. As a junior, she qualified as a semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. She also independently taught herself the AP Comparative Government curriculum, a course that is not offered at BJSHS, and scored a perfect 5 on the accompanying AP exam. Come fall, Hannon will attend Washington and Lee University, majoring in economics.

The district wholeheartedly congratulates both students on their incredible accomplishments and is confident that they will continue to achieve great success in their post-high school lives. Superintendent of schools Linda J. Rozzi says, “Both young women have been wonderful ambassadors of Babylon Junior-Senior High School. They will now take their talents into the world after graduation as they continue to represent us as proud Babylon alumni.”
