Babylon Couple Charged After Assaulting Officer: Police

BREAKING: Police responded to a report of a man waving a shovel at people Tuesday; his wife hit an officer with a police baton, police say.

BABYLON, NY – A Babylon couple faces charges after they assaulted a police officer in Babylon Tuesday night, police said.

According to Suffolk Police, a First Precinct patrol sergeant and a police officer responded to a 911 call of a man waving a shovel at people outside of 19 Whalers Cove at about 9:25 p.m.

The officer and sergeant began to interview the man, 57-year-old Stephen Visconti, who was seated on the front patio of the home, which is located in the Whalers Cove condominium complex off John Street. During the conversation, the man’s wife, 58-year-old Pamela Visctonti, exited the home and stood between the officer and her husband, police said.

While the sergeant was attempting to remove Pamela from the patio, Stephen raised his arm, threatening to throw a coffee mug at the officer, police said.

The officer deployed her taser, striking Stephen, however, he was able to remove the darts from his body, police said. Stephen then threw the mug toward the officer’s head, police said.

During the sergeant’s attempt to remove Pamela from the situation, both the sergeant and Pamela fell to the ground, police said.

Pamela was able to take possession of a police baton and struck the female officer in the forehead, police said.

Stephen then raised a long-handle shovel above his head, threatening to strike the female officer, and the sergeant pushed Stephen away from the officer, police said.

Stephen and Pamela then went inside the home, but they exited a short time later and were arrested, police said.

Pamela Visconti is charged with second degree assault. Stephen Visconti is charged with second degree obstructing governmental administration and second degree menacing.

Both are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
