Babylon Elementary School Holds Safety Spirit Week
Weeklong Event Focus on Community Helpers and Personal Safety Techniques
Students and staff at Babylon Elementary School focused on all things safety-related for the week of October 10 for a special themed spirit week. Through a series of activities and events developed by the BES Social Emotional Learning Committee, the students were encouraged to think about the people in the community who keep them safe, and what they themselves can do to stay safe in school and in the larger community.
Each morning, students made pledges to make the school a fun and safe place to be. On Wednesday, students and staff dressed as their favorite community helpers, including firefighters, police officers, postal workers and, in some cases, school principals! The students were also treated to visits by firefighters, police officers and additional teachers, who explained their roles in the community. On Thursday, the students wore bright colors to highlight importance of staying visible while walking or biking around the neighborhood. Finally, on Friday the school had a visit by the Babylon Fire Department, which showed off its equipment. Members gave safety tips and the students wore red to honor the brave volunteers.
The special events were a great way to emphasize the importance of taking steps to stay safe in everyday life as well as recognize the figures who work to keep the community safe.
