Babylon Elementary School Students Get Lessons in Fire Prevention

Babylon Fire Department Gives Students Hands-on Safety Experience

October is Fire Prevention Month, and in the spirit of safety, students received an inside-look at fire prevention skills, courtesy of volunteers from the Babylon Fire Department. Volunteers from the Department visited the school on October 13, along with their firetrucks and equipment to give students hands-on experience in fire safety expertise and fire prevention skills.

“We are very grateful for the volunteers from the Babylon Fire Department for taking the time to spend with our students,” said Principal Thomas Keogh. “Our students pledge every day to be safe, respectful and responsible. It is very important for our students to acquire skills that not only keep them safe at school, but teach them how to be safe and responsible at home and wherever they are.”

Fire Prevention Month is recognized in October of each year, with Fire Prevention Week falling on the week of October 9. Fire Prevention Month recognizes the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Each year, schools and institutions across the country recognize the importance of fire safety in keeping our communities safe.

This year’s fire prevention activities at BES included a school-wide assembly, individual classroom presentations and activities for the students to learn about firefighter equipment and tools. Students were also given a chance to go outside and see the different parts of the firetrucks in person. These activities not only gave our students time to interact with each other and the firefighters in a hands-on setting, they provided them with the skills needed to stay safe.
