Babylon High Schoolers Have What It Takes to Survive
Students Engage in Hands-On Library Exercise Based on Lord of the Flies
Babylon Junior-Senior High School 10th grade English language arts students took part in a hands-on library activity that explored the themes of the classic novel Lord of the Flies. The exciting lesson provided students with the tools necessary to gain a deeper understanding of William Golding’s harrowing story of survival, morality and social structures.
On November 30, the students in Mr. Schappert's, Mrs. Jones's, Mr. Cropsey's and Mr. Fasano's classes visited the school library, at which they were greeted with five hands-on survival stations. They interacted with 1950s “artifacts,” decoded secret messages, made survival decisions, built primitive shelter structures and evaluated democratic and authoritarian styles of governance. The lesson was assembled with the help of library media specialist, Mary Biener.
