BHS Celebrates Youth Art Month
Student Artists Take Part in a Variety of Art-Related Activities, Contests
The student artists at Babylon Junior-Senior High School celebrated Youth Art Month in a variety of ways this year. Youth Art Month, held every March by the National Art Educators Association, saw Babylon student artists producing special art pieces and displays while taking part in various exhibits.
In the Junior High Art Club, students created ojos de Dios, or eyes of God, weavings. The student artists also created teacher appreciation gifts and “poem in your pocket” button designs to be distributed to teachers and friends in May. Additionally, seventh and eighth grade student artists had their works on display at the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association’s annual Children’s Show display, while others had their works on display at the New York State Art Teachers Association’s virtual legislative show.
Students in the National Art Honor Society collaborated to create gilded age-themed, 6x6 displays, which were put on display in the school’s hallways. Honor society students also learned crocheting, participated in a “Hanging with my Peeps” photo assignment, and created mock ups for a new mural design to be painted at Gilgo Beach in May. Finally, the honor society students collaborated with local pizza spot, The Pizzeria, to design new mascots for the business. The students held client meetings with owner Cliff Weinstein, during which they discussed various ideas and business marketing strategies. The student artists created and submitted mock-ups of the mascots for approval by Mr. Weinstein, and then assembled their final designs, which will be hanging on display at The Pizzeria.
